Did you grow up with dessert? We grew up with dessert. Not sand - that is desert (I had to look it up). Every night, we sat as a family in the dining room, with a table cloth, cloth napkins and all, to a three course meal. Dinner, salad, (yes, we ate salad second) and then dessert. And, in general, we had high expectations for dessert - when Mom on occasion would serve us fruit salad for dessert, it was greeted, from me anyways, with moans, dirty looks and all round exaggerated unenthusiasm (I think the sound Gaaaaaaahhhhhh! was produced). Looking back, we were so spoiled - I totally have memories of cakes and tarts and pies for dessert, like EVERY NIGHT - maybe my brother or sister will correct me on this one, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

So I totally don't do that now, but dessert is definitely considered a "course" in our household. The problem is, every night was turning into ice cream night, cookies night and eat easter candy night. Well, I have laid down the law and "super-fun" desserts are to be reserved for the weekend, and a more balanced, healthy option will be offered during the week. Awesome, right? Awesome, except I have to deliver now. Little eager eyes, sold on the healthy lifestyle speech I gave last week are now expecting wholesome, but yummy, desserts on their plates after dinner. Help me out folks, give me some healthy recipes for desserts that kids will like (warning: Grace and Edie can smell flax from a mile away, errrr, so can Jo).

Bring them on! I'm counting on you! (If you want to make if for me too I will give you my address).

Here, here!! I too grew up in a home that celebrated every meal with a home-made (!) dessert each and every night. Lemon custard, apple pie and cheese, fruit loaf, spice cake, you name it my lovely Mum would make it.....thoroughly spoiled by all the love...

P.S. Healthy dessert - is that an oxymoron?!? Look forward to seeing what comes forth! Enjoy your recently discovered blog...thanks :-)

I recently saw this on an episode of Chef at Home, and his son seemed to eat it up...I was intrigued, but haven't tried it yet. Fast, Easy, Silken Tofu Chocolate Mousse:

I'm thinking it could go either way....might be worth a try tho.

Baked apples. (Pears work, too). Make them kid-dish with some brown sugar and cinnamon. Yum! Berries with Cool Whip are easy, too.

We aren't dessert kind of people (we aren't desert people either.)

I was going to recommend an apple crisp... low in fat and the crust is made with oatmeal. I've been known to serve it with a vanilla yogurt (or frozen yogurt.)

Do you have Loony Spoons and/or Crazy Plates, they have some really good lower fat, better for you recipes that might be suitable.

We had ice cream after Sunday dinners sometimes and once in a while we'd go crazy and have jello during the week, but other than that it was just fruit. Living on a fruit farm meant we always had piles of fresh fruit or in the winter, fruit we'd canned ourselves. I still think fruit is the best dessert. If not fresh, then they lots of variety of frozen berries and peaches and other fruits that are yummy. Sometimes I'll put a dollop of all-natural yoghurt on top and maybe even a little granola and call it a parfait. Serve it layered in a fancy parfait glass!

NAt - I do have the Looney books, havent' dug them out for awhile. Good call.

Xup - sounds delish. I've been doing the plain yogurt with real maple syrup and they seem to like that, I'll add some berries next time (baby steps...)

Sorbet (Sherbet), popsicles, granola bars, apple sauce, rice pudding (with low fat cream or milk). I'm also a big fan of Chinese dessert buns, which you can find at most Asian grocers. :)
