Jo has made new golf buddies (Balls! Why did I encourage him to expand his social network?) and last Saturday he was committed to these new friends for 9 hours (I started counting after 6 hours had passed).

Now I have a pretty healthy social life – no complaints in that department. But my social life takes me on outings that last 2, 3 hours tops. Then I return to the loving arms of my husband and freshly scrubbed cherubs asleep in their beds. Whooooops, that’s the fantasy version. So what if the reality is that I come home to a husband basked in the blue glow of the television and children, who are thankfully asleep, but caked with summer substance (that interesting combination of melted freezies, sand, sunscreen and OFF!) It’s still all good because I have ducked domestic duties for a couple of hours and that always leaves me feeling refreshed

But back to this golf thing. And I remember my dad doing this two. Saturday, one of the two days of the weekend, some men-folk leave the marital home and swing their club around (the metal one sillies) for MINIMUM six hours. If I complain, Jo says I’m welcome to do the same. But tell me gentle reader, what activity would take me out of the home for 6-9 hours? I certainly don’t need to do this every weekend, contrary to popular belief I enjoy spending time with Grace and Edie, but I would like to have something in my back pocket, to pull out now and then if I feel like a substantial escape.

Suggestions?

Grrr. Golf. Don't get me started. I share your sentiments. My friend took sailing lessons when she wanted to get away. A few hours out on the water...no kids...floating around. I always thought that sounded pretty appealing.

Take the train to Montreal and go shopping on Saint-Catherine's. Be sure to stop for a nice lunch and a cheeky mid-afternoon pint before boarding the train back home.

Teapotkid has a good suggestion, except I'd spend Montreal time in the Plateau, not Saint Catherine Street. A spa day would also suck up a lot of time and leave you feeling pampered and relaxed. The only problem with long escapes is that you'll probably have to do them on your own since women don't seem to be able to schedule that much time away as easily as men. But hey - alone is good, too.

I suggest that you take a weekend this summer or early fall and get your motorcycle license, and then buy yourself a bike in the spring... We can do day excursions together around the region. Ice cream in Merrickville? Le Nordik in Chelsea? The beaches in Gatineau Park? The open road is ours! Think about it...

I was also going to suggest road trips to shop in Montreal.

How about taking a workshop. Algonquin has tons of weekend courses.

Yeah, I got nothing...I never leave the house for that long, either.

I just wanted to say that your definition of "summer substance" was spot-on and made me snort with laughter :).

Hilarious. Really!
I'm always in favour of a girls getaway, no matter what the activity. Roadtripping, flea markets, workshops, shopping - whatever. Take Jo up on his offer and just go.
Remember though, book ahead - before the boys do!
