Fuck.

Sentencing was today. He got 9 months probation, no jail time. He is woefully sorry for all of it. He didn't realize she was too "drunk" to willingly give consent (drugging charges were thrown out).

Look out for each other ladies, because nobody else is.

Violent crimes against women and children are still treated like misdemeanors in this country. Bilk some people out of some money though and look out -- they throw the book at you. Reality bites.

one of the worst parts is (and there are many) that my friend was present for the sentencing, read a lengthy, detailed victim impact statement, made herself vulnerable all over again (rapist was there) for the sake of justice, and this is how the crime ranks in severity. honestly, makes you want to call for a return of vigilantiism (sp?)

I think that the whole point of vigilantism is that it doesn't need a "call" -- you just go out and get on with it. But then you go to jail. Because THAT'S bad.

This may be over for your friend - I hope so and I wish her the best - but I suspect it's not over for other women.

Alves is a sexual predator, whose campaign of sexual terrorism is facilitated by police officers who trivialize crimes of violence against women. Like the former head of a Sexual Offenses Squad in
BC.

Your friend is amazing and courageous. Remind her of that, and of how much she has done to ensure that Alves is legally recognized as a sexual predator.

This makes me sick, where's the justice. Does not give one much faith in the system.
