I’ve almost finished my Christmas shopping for the kids. I have one thing left for Gracie, and that is an MP3 player. I’m tickled that at 7 she is digging music, and I really want to help guide her in the right direction here. I am not going to fight the inevitable that she is going to listen to High School Musical and Miley Cyrus, but I figure I can also download a few tunes of my picking that she will likely enjoy as well. I do want to keep it pretty innocent though, and that is where I would like to ask for your help. What classics do you think would appeal to a 7 year old? She loves the beat of Police on My Back by the Clash, and she also likes some Ramones songs, so I’ll put a few on there. I’m pretty well versed in punk rock, but not so much in other genres. So, what do you think? Any songs by, say, the Beatles you might suggest? Or the Monkeys? I want to keep it light and fun and GOOD so hopefully we can help instill a love of music in her. Throw me a few titles! Maybe I’ll expand my own tastes a bit.

Any of the earlier Beatles tunes will be fun for a 7-yer-old (I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Love You Ya Ya Ya, maybe even Yellow Submarine?) Also, Elvis (Blue Suede shoes - what girl doesn't love songs about shoes?)Richie Valens La Bamba? Buddy Holly, Peggy Sue? Beach Boys (kids love the Boys), Fats Domino, Blueberry Hill? How about some Rat Pack tunes -- Sammy Davis, Candy Man; Dean Martin That's Amore, There should also be some Stones in there somewhere...I can't think of something suitable for a 7-year old offhand...

Will you throw something at me if I suggest ABBA?

A little Can-con for you...

The Boy really really loves Pulling on a Line by Great Lake Swimmers and See You on the Moon. (Both totally safe for kids... and mom's too.) I know it's not classic rock but it gets that folk vibe in there.

Corb Blund, Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier and Truck Got Stuck.

My kids really like the Beatles. Their favourites are Yellow Submarine, Here Comes The Sun, and All You Need Is Love.

I'd also recommend Great Big Sea.

When I was younger, I had a doll that you could wind up and she used to play the song "Yesterday" by the Beatles, so that's a good one, though its a bit more serious. Penny Lane, Michelle, Imagine and Across the Universe are favorites of mine as well.

P.S. We're fans of The Clash and Ramones at my house as well!:)

I second the Great Big Sea. Rae, who is also seven, LOVES David Bowie. Her dad downloaded the best of album, BoweChanges, onto her mp3 and she loves it.
